Neighborhood Transformation

COS First Parish in ACNA to Blaze Urban Ministry Trail

On March 15-17, 2012 Christ Our Savior Anglican Church organized a Neighborhood Transformation (NT) Training of Local Trainers in conjunction with Anglican Health Ministries (AHM) in Torrance, CA. Stan Rowland, founder of the Global Community Health Evangelism (CHE) movement, ran the training along with Garold Elston of Salvaged Lives Ministries from Bakersfield, CA.

This training represented two firsts:  The first of its type in the Greater Los Angeles area and the first time it was held in an ACNA parish, anywhere. Historically, Anglicans have been involved in the Global CHE movement through the Church of Uganda. Several years ago, CHE was adapted for North American urban contexts and NT was born. As Anglicans have led the way internationally, COS is also leading the way through  introducing NT to America’s largest metropolitan area.

16 participants were trained at COS over the weekend.

Sixteen people from the Los Angeles South Bay area were trained on how a local parish can reach their community with the transforming love of the Jesus Christ. Participants were taught how to lead the urban poor from relief, to betterment, and then finally development. This is accomplished through focusing on the assets that already exist in the community rather than deficits. The result is empowerment of people as they are led out of cyclical poverty. Dependency on outside aid is also reduced as people learn they are made in God’s Image, called to have dominion over the earth.

Christ Our Savior Anglican Church is hopeful that it will be able to use NT to reach the Old Torrance community and has already begun to employ the NT techniques in the neighborhood that is within walking distance of the parish building.

COS  partnered with AHM to make this training available. AHM  is becoming an affiliate with the Collaborative for Neighborhood Transformation to bring NT training to Anglican parishes throughout North America. If you are interested in hosting a training, please contact Dr. Val Finnell at

AHM is a diocesan ministry of the Missionary Diocese of All Saints (MDAS) under the oversight of The Rt. Rev. William H. Ilgenfritz. The MDAS upholds the Evangelical Faith and Catholic Order which is the inheritance of the Anglican Way.
